The Ultimate Guide to Learning European Geography
Europe is a nightmare for geography students—and a dream for puzzle lovers. It packs over 40 distinct countries into a relatively small area. The map is a jigsaw puzzle of jagged coastlines, mountain ranges, and borders that have shifted dozens of times over the last century.
If you struggle to tell Slovenia from Slovakia or getting the Baltics in the right order, you aren't alone. Here is your guide to untangling the map of the Old Continent.
1. The Big Powers (The Easy Wins)
Start with the countries that are largest and most recognizable.
- The UK: The island chain off the northwest coast.
- France: The "hexagon" directly south of the UK.
- Spain & Portugal: The Iberian Peninsula in the southwest corner.
- Italy: The unmistakable boot kicking midway into the Mediterranean.
- Germany: The economic engine in the center.
Once you place these, you have "anchor points" to attach other countries to.
2. Scandinavia (The Tiger)
Look at the top of Europe.
- Norway is the back/spine (left).
- Sweden is the middle.
- Finland is the right. This region looks a bit like a tiger or dog pouncing.
3. The Baltics (Alphabetical Order)
On the eastern side of the Baltic Sea, running North to South, are three small countries:
- Estonia
- Latvia
- Lithuania They are in alphabetical order! This is the single best geography hack for Europe.
4. The Balkans (The Hardest Part)
This region in southeast Europe is fractured into many small nations roughly south of Hungary.
- Slovenia: Small, alpine, touches Italy.
- Croatia: Hugs the coast like a "C" shaped croissant (C for Croatia).
- Bosnia & Herzegovina: The heart-shaped country inside the croissant.
- Montenegro & Albania: Moving further south down the coast.
- Greece: The southern tip, shattered into islands.
5. The Microstates
Don't forget the tiny dots!
- Vatican City & San Marino: Inside Italy.
- Monaco: Coast of France.
- Andorra: Between Spain and France.
- Liechtenstein: Between Swiss and Austria.
- Malta: Island south of Italy.
Practice Strategy
Don't try to learn it all in one day. Focus on one region at a time.
- Play Spot the Nation but ignore the timer at first. Just scan.
- Focus purely on Western Europe until you are perfect.
- Add Scandinavia.
- Finally, tackle the Balkans and Eastern Europe.
With consistent practice on Atlas Arcade, the confusing jumble of lines will resolve into familiar neighborhoods. You'll master Europe in no time.
